Building a new home? Plan for motorized shades before drywall

October 31, 2025

PowerView® Automation is a low-voltage system: a 16/2 wire runs to the inside right corner of each window opening and back to a 16-shade transformer in the utility room, plugged into a dedicated 15-amp outlet. Simple — while the walls are open.

Prewire during construction and your shades have reliable power forever: no batteries, no recharging, no exposed cords. Skip it, and the only option later is battery power — twelve AA batteries or a rechargeable pack per shade. It works, but a prewired system looks cleaner and performs better for the life of the house.

What the motors buy you

  • Control from a remote, your phone, or your voice.
  • Schedules in the free PowerView® app — shades that open and close on their own.
  • Quiet operation and smart-home integration with Alexa, Control4 and Apple HomeKit.
  • Energy efficiency and UV protection for floors and furniture, on autopilot.

Get us in before the drywall

We work directly with your builder or electrician to make sure the prewire is right — we’ve done it with many of the area’s custom builders. While they do their part, come walk the Ann Arbor showroom and see every option running live; it’s much easier to plan windows you’ve actually operated.

Smart design is mostly planning ahead. Before drywall goes up, talk to us — your Hunter Douglas dealer for Ann Arbor, Plymouth, Brighton and Jackson since 1952.
