How to choose the right mattress for you

January 21, 2026

Finding the right mattress shouldn’t feel overwhelming. Three things actually matter: your sleep position, your comfort preference, and the kind of support your body needs. Everything else is noise.

On our Ann Arbor floor you’ll find two lines worth knowing: Helix, with three models on display — Sunset Elite, Midnight Lux and Twilight Core — and Chattam & Wells, a Michigan-made organic line built with premium latex, Joma wool and silk. There are motion bases to try, too.

Start with how you sleep

Side sleepers usually want medium firmness — enough cushion for shoulders and hips, with support that keeps the spine straight. Lie on your side for at least ninety seconds and check: pressure in the shoulders? Hips supported? Back straight rather than twisted? For side sleepers we often suggest Helix’s ErgoAlign layer, which adds back support without giving up the comfortable feel.

Back sleepers do best when the lower back is supported and the hips don’t sink too far. Stomach sleepers usually need a firmer feel to avoid low-back strain — supportive without feeling like the floor.

Compare the three Helix feels side by side

  • Sunset Elite — the cushioned, pressure-relieving end
  • Midnight Lux — the balanced middle that suits many sleepers
  • Twilight Core — the firmer, more supportive end

The point of a showroom is trying them in your actual sleep position, not sitting politely on the edge. We’ll insist on it, kindly.

Don’t overlook the base

A motion base can change the sleep more than people expect: head elevation for easier breathing, snoring or reading in bed; adjustable lumbar support for lower-back comfort; massage for winding down. If you’ve never tried one, budget five minutes for it — it’s the part of the visit that surprises people.

The organic route: Chattam & Wells

If natural materials and craftsmanship matter — or you sleep hot, or you’re sensitive to synthetics — the Michigan-made Chattam & Wells line is worth experiencing: resilient latex support, Joma wool for temperature, silk for the finish.

How to test a mattress properly

  • Lie down in your normal sleep position — not on your back if you’re a side sleeper.
  • Stay there one to two minutes; first impressions lie.
  • Ask: pressure in the shoulders or hips? Lower back supported? Spine aligned?

Come lie down at the Ann Arbor showroom and a designer will narrow the floor to two or three honest candidates — nobody here earns commission, so the recommendation is about your sleep, not a quota.
